7/29, 8:00am PT - The day started slowly, as the shades were drawn and the windows closed, so the boys slumbered away until I woke them in time to catch the end of breakfast downstairs. Today marks the almost-halfway point of the trip, and it’s time to tend to the dirty clothes; I found a wash and fold place on Townsend Street to magically make 20 pounds laundry sweet-smelling again. TMI?
12:30 pm PT - Looking for something less-challenging for today’s entertainment, we opted to go to the AMC Meteron across the street for the midday showing of R.I.P.D. Clever movie, but wish The Heat was one of the choices.
4:00 pm PT - Game gear on, we walked to the
BART Powell Street Station and boarded a Dublin train for the Coliseum. We walked across the ramp to the stadium and queued up at Gate C. The doors opened on time at 5:30 and the boys raced for right field to try and snag a fly from the tail-end of Jay’s batting practice. The session was a bit of a dud because most of the batters were right-handed sending the majority of balls to left field. Empty-handed, we took up our seats in Section 110, Row 6.
7:05 pm PT - The game was most-likely the lightest fan attendance we’ve ever seen on a baseball trip. Only xx,xxx made it through the turnstiles, barely filling the lower bowl.
The team is in first place, yet the team hardly draws a crowd. Probably not sustainable in the long-run, making the move to San Jose the right thing for baseball in the Bay Area. The stadium is a bit tatty, showing its age (built in 1960), and in places, outright disrepair.
The game was a slug-fest, with the A’s ringing up four runs in the bott
om of the 1st inning. The Jay’s pitching staff never got it going, which led to their demise. A’s win 9-4.
11:00 pm PT - BART efficiently scooted us back to SF in about 30 minutes. Back at the room, we called for one more knock on the door from room service, and then we were lights out.
