6/25/10, 9:30am: We met cousin Jeff Bernardy for brunch at a local joint downtown and learned about his plans to run in the Athens Marathon in October. The boys and I really had a great time seeing Jeff in his hometown.
6/25 12 Noon: We loaded up the Hertz car for the three hour drive to Trinidad CO to catch the Southwest Chief. Due to recent flooding, the train had been cancelled. Luckily, I called Amtrak to check the train’s status and leaned they intended to put us on a chartered bus us well into Kansas. Miracle of miracles, I was able to rebook on the California Zephyr, a route fairly parallel to the SW Chief, from Denver to Des Moines. The Hertz car was ditched in downtown Denver and we are on board and having dinner in the dining car by 8pm. Our bedroom was a fabulous retreat, especially considering the train was jammed with passengers, including an entire coach car filled with smelly Boy Scouts.
6/27/10: 1pm: We make our way to Kaufmann Stadium and take our seats during batting Royals batting practice. The day was mostly sunny an brutally hot. So bad, we took refuge in the shade closer to home plate, but much higher. Nonetheless, the game was a good one with the home team taking it to their cross-state NL rivals the Cardinals. Royals 10, Cardinals 3, complete with a “saw it in my lifetime” homer by Albert Pujols. After the game, the boys got to “run the bases” after a walk around the perimeter of the field.
Hot and tired, we returned to the hotel, went for a swim, and then had dinner at a japanese teppanyaki restaurant.
Albert Pujols goes yard in the top of the 6th inning:
